Questions

Do I need a license to work as a dental assistant in Maryland?
A license is not required for basic chairside duties. However, you must be certified as a Dental Radiation Technologist (DRT) to perform X-rays or as a Qualified Dental Assistant (QDA) for expanded duties.
How long is my DRT certification valid?
Certification is valid for two years and typically expires on the second anniversary of its effective date.
What are the CE requirements for renewal?
DRTs must complete a 2-hour Board-approved course in infection control for each renewal cycle. If you have not practiced 600 hours in the last 6 years, additional CE is required.
Can I perform X-rays while my application is pending?
No. You must have the physical certificate in your possession and displayed at your place of employment before performing any radiographic procedures.
