How to Apply

Register as a Pharmacy Technician Candidate (PTC) ▾Before working or training, you must register as a Candidate. Create an account on the Online Services Portal and submit the application with the $50 fee.

Complete Training and Experience ▾Choose one of three paths: Option A (Accredited program), Option B (LA Dept of Education Jump Start), or Option C (600 hours of on-the-job training under a licensed pharmacist).

Pass a National Certification Exam ▾Successfully pass either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) ExCPT exam.

Apply for Pharmacy Technician Certificate ▾Once training and exams are complete, log back into the portal to upgrade your registration to a full Pharmacy Technician Certificate ($100 fee).

Complete Criminal Background Check ▾After submitting your certificate application, the Board will email you specific instructions and codes for fingerprinting through the Louisiana State Police and FBI.

Premature Background Check

Applicants often attempt to get fingerprinted before receiving the Board's specific instruction email. The Board cannot accept background checks initiated without their specific codes.
Missing LASID for Minors
▾
High school students in the Jump Start program often fail to provide their LASID, which is mandatory for the Board to verify enrollment with the Dept of Education.
CPE Monitor Sync Issues
▾
During renewal, the portal performs an automated check of the NABP CPE Monitor. If your NABP e-Profile ID is not correctly linked or CE is not logged, the renewal will be blocked.
Expired Candidate Registration
▾
The PTC registration is valid for only 24 months and is non-renewable. If a candidate does not complete all requirements within this window, they must start the process over.
Questions
What is the minimum age to become a pharmacy technician in Louisiana?

Generally, you must be at least 18 years old. However, students 16 and older may register as candidates if enrolled in a Louisiana Dept of Education Jump Start program.
How many hours of continuing education (CE) are required?
